How To Solve the Most Common Bra Problems

  • 4 min read

Nothing makes your day like the confidence (and comfort) of a perfectly fitted bra. The right fit offers support and creates a flawless silhouette so seamless you forget you’re even wearing one. We break down the most common bra fit issues and how to solve them, so everyone can enjoy all-day comfort with the Fines Line ‘Fit Of Your Life’ promise without compromise (we also offer free Australia-wide returns!*)

The Most Common Bra Fit Problems (and How to Fix Them)

Problem 1: Bra Band Rising Up At The Back

If your bra band is riding up, it’s a telltale sign that you’re wearing the wrong size. Your band provides majority of the support, so it’s so important to get this right. Bras bands so stretch over time so firstly, try fastening your bra on a tighter hook and if that doesn’t help, you may need to down in the band (If you do, you may need to size up in the cup - this is called sister sizing). A well-fitting band should sit snugly and parallel to the floor.

Problem 2: Bra Band Creating Back Bulge

If your bra creates back bulging, your band may be too tight or the fabric may not be smooth enough. Look for bras made from soft, stretchable fabrics or have a wider band for a smoother, more flattering fit. We recommend trying a style like our Memory Full Coverage Bra or Memory Blessed Full Coverage Bra

Problem 3: Empty Bra Cups

Empty cups or gaping cups means there’s too much room in your bra. To fix this, try tightening the straps first. If that doesn’t solve the issue, you may need to go down a cup size. If you’ve lost fullness in your breasts, a balconette-style bra or padded moulded cup bra can provide extra lift and shape.

Problem 4: Breast Spillage Out The Top & Sides

The opposite problem to gaping cups. If your breasts are spilling over the top or sides of your bra, your cup size is too small. Consider sizing up for better coverage and support. A full-coverage bra can also help ensure a smooth, seamless look under clothing.

Problem 5: Bra Straps Falling Down

Straps that won’t stay put? It might be time to tighten them. You should check your bra straps are the correct length every few days for optimal support. If they’re still slipping down off your shoulders, consider a racerback style bra or bra with a racerback conversion option, or look for a style with thicker bra straps. Bra straps can stretch over time too, so if it’s an old bra it might be time to retire and replace completely.

Problem 7: Bra Straps Digging Into Your Shoulders

Uncomfortable straps are often a sign that your band isn’t providing enough support, instead shifting the weight onto your shoulders. Try to loosen the straps first. If that doesn’t help, check your band size. If you can fit more than two fingers under the band, it’s likely too big and needs to be adjusted to a tighter hook.

Our Most Frequently Asked Questions About Common Bra Problems

Q: How do I make sure my bra fits properly?

We’ve even made it super easy to do online with our Online Bra Fit Quiz which guides you through every step of the way.

Q: What are the symptoms of bad fitting bras?

A: If your bra isn’t fitting right, your body will let you know. The most common signs include red marks from too-tight straps, cups that gape or overflow, underwire that pokes or a band that rides up your back. Another telltale sign is having to constantly adjusting your bra throughout the day. When a bra fits properly, you shouldn’t have to think about it at all.

Q: Why is my bra not laying flat between my breasts?

A: It could either be a sizing or style issue. Firstly, check that your cups are not too small. If they’re too small it will force the underwire to sit away from your body. If the band is too loose, it won’t provide enough support to keep everything in place. However, it could also be the bra’s design, for example plunge bra styles won’t always sit flat like a full-coverage bra would. If this happens often, it might be worth trying a bra with a higher centre gore for a more secure fit.
